After the Civil War, the United States went through a period of unrest with the Native American Population. Americans immigrated into the west either trying to start a new life with new opportunity or to get rich by mining gold. There was one problem, majority of land was occupied by Native Americans and had been for hundreds of years prior. The US was trying to sign treaties with the Indians such as the Treaty of Ft. Laramie, that would give Native Americans land that's reserved for them. But the promises behind these treaties were never delivered all the way. Food was not always delivered and the Indians would be forced out of their reserved areas once more. All these complications created a very bad relationship between the government and the Native Tribes which would eventually lead to Violence and death on both sides. Men were stabbed through with shotgun barrels, Cheyenne women and children clubbed to death. Custer described the “stark, stiff, naked and horribly mutilated bodies of our dead Comrades,” and claimed that “Squaws and Children . . . had been slain in the excitement and confusion of the first charge.” This is a news report from the day after the Lead chief of the Sioux tribe was murdered.
